Connecting chromosomes, crisis, and cancer.

Cancer is a disease of impaired genome stability. The molecular forces that maintain genome integrity and sense altered chromosome structure are invariably subverted in cancer cells. Here, we explore the contrasting contributions of telomeres in the initiation and suppression of cancer and review the evidence supporting a role for telomere dysfunction as a mechanism driving the radical chromoso...

Automatic Pairing of Chromosomes

Karyogram is a visual depiction of chromosomes as a pair-wise ordered arrangement. Chromosomes from 30 karyograms of the Lisbon-K1 dataset are automatically paired by a multiclass k-Nearest Neighbor classifier and the performance is discussed. Final Project Report CS 174

Pushing and Pulling: Microtubules Mediate Meiotic Pairing and Synapsis

Meiotic pairing in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is facilitated by chromosomal sites known as pairing centers that are tethered to the nuclear envelope. Sato et al. (2009) and Penkner et al. (2009) provide insight into how proteins linking pairing centers and the microtubule cytoskeleton mediate homolog pairing and restrict synapsis to homologous pairs of chromosomes.

Pulling on the nascent RNA during transcription does not alter kinetics of elongation or ubiquitous pausing.

Transcriptional elongation and termination by RNA polymerase (RNAP) are controlled by interactions among the nascent RNA, DNA, and RNAP that comprise the ternary transcription elongation complex (TEC). To probe the effects of cotranscriptionally folded RNA hairpins on elongation as well as the stability of the TEC, we developed a single-molecule assay to monitor RNA elongation by Escherichia co...

Ectopic pairing in the salivary chromosomes of mosquitoes.

Besides, more common and better known somatic pairing of homologous chromosome regions (Painter 1933), another kind of pairing has been observed which involves bands at non-homologous positions along the chromosome(s) . Bridges (1935) was the pioneer to report this type of pairing in the salivary chro mosomes of Drosophila melanogaster, and later Metz and Lawrence (1938) and Metz (1947) observe...
